We are active investors and serve on the Boards of Directors of our portfolio companies. Together, the Managers have served on over 35 different Boards of Directors.
John L. Cassis, MBA
John L. Cassis joined Cross Atlantic Partners in 1994 as a Managing Partner. He was formerly a Director of Salomon Brothers Venture Capital, which he joined in 1986 and headed from 1990 to 1994. From 1981 to 1986, he was President of Tower Hall, a development banking company he founded. From 1976 to 1981 he was a Managing Director of Ardshiel Associates, Inc. a merchant bank. In 1972, Mr. Cassis joined Johnson & Johnson where he had direct operating experience, founded the J&J Development Corporation, that firm’s venture capital arm, and was J&J’s Manager of Acquisitions. He served on the boards of directors of many companies, including IMPATH (Chairman), Dome Imaging Systems (Chairman), ILEX Oncology, NOMOS Corporation, Eximias Pharmaceuticals, Galt Associates, and Nutrition 21, and currently holds directorships in Medivance, BioMedical Enterprises, LifeMed Media, IntegriChain, and Medco Health Solutions. Mr. Cassis is a graduate of Harvard University (BA ’70) and the Harvard Business School (MBA ‘72).
Sandra Panem, Ph.D.
Sandra Panem joined Cross Atlantic Partners in 2000 as a Managing Partner. Previously, she was President of Vector Fund Management, where she was responsible for the start-up, capital raising, and management of the asset management affiliate of Vector Securities International. Operations included the management of the Vector Later-Stage Equity Fund, L.P., and Vector Later-Stage Equity Fund II, L.P., private partnerships committing $240 million to equity investments in the emerging life science and healthcare industries. Prior to joining Vector, Dr. Panem served as Vice President and Portfolio Manager for the Oppenheimer Global BioTech Fund, a $200 million mutual fund that invested in public and private biotechnology companies. Prior to Oppenheimer, Dr. Panem was Vice President at Salomon Brothers, Inc. where she acted as a member of Salomon Brothers Venture Capital, a $40 million fund focused on early and later-stage life science and technology investments. Dr. Panem was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago and a Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and is the author of several books and papers concerning the commercialization of new medical technologies. Currently, she holds directorships in Acorda Therapeutics, Labcyte, GenomeQuest, and MDx Medical, and is an observer on the board of Palyon Corp. She is a director of the New York Biotechnology Association. She received a B.S. Degree in Biochemistry ('66) and a Ph.D. in Microbiology ('70) from the University of Chicago.
James B. Dougherty, M.D., MBA
James B. Dougherty joined Cross Atlantic Partners in 2003 as a Venture Partner. Dr. Dougherty is the co-founder of Arcus Ventures (2007), a boutique fund focused on early stage oncology investments. From 2001 to 2007, he was a Principal of the Arcus Group , a healthcare consulting firm based in NYC . He was formerly the Deputy Physician-in-Chief at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from 1997 -2001, with responsibilities for the oversight of MSKCC’s clinical programs. Dr. Dougherty has provided strategic consulting guidance and direction on a broad variety of industry areas to providers, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as investors for private and public corporations. Dr. Dougherty is a graduate of Georgetown College (BS ‘76); Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine (MD ‘80) and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (MBA ‘97). He completed internal medicine training at Cornell University School of Medicine and a medical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Steven L. Soignet, M.D.
Steven L. Soignet joined Cross Atlantic Partners as a Venture Partner in 2003. Dr. Soignet is the co-founder of Arcus Ventures (2007), a boutique fund focused on early stage oncology investments. From 2001 to 2007, he was a Principal of the Arcus Group , a healthcare consulting firm based in NYC. Formerly, he held a faculty appointment on the Developmental Chemotherapy Service, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and in the Department of Medicine, Cornell University Medical Center. He has broad experience in early phase clinical drug development in both hematological and solid tumors which included novel differentiation agents, transcription modulators, cell cycle inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, and cytotoxic chemotherapies. He was a lead investigator of a Pilot and a large US Multicenter Trial that lead to FDA approval of arsenic trioxide for the treatment of relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia. Dr. Soignet is a graduate of the University of New Orleans (BS ‘88); LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans (MD ‘92) and completed internal medicine training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a hematology/oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NY. |
